LASEK is a surface treatment of the cornea that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism – without creating a flap in the cornea. That makes it particularly suitable if you have thin corneas, or if you play sport or work in a setting where your eyes may take a knock: with no flap, flap-related complications cannot occur, either during the procedure or later in life.
In a LASEK treatment the epithelium – the outermost cell layer of the cornea – is loosened with a mild alcohol solution and moved aside. The Alcon WaveLight EX500 excimer laser then reshapes the cornea to your own measurements. A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye for protection while the epithelium heals over, which takes a few days, and is then removed.
Surface treatment is the oldest and most thoroughly proven family of refractive laser surgery – the first refractive excimer laser treatment on a sighted human eye was performed by Marguerite McDonald in New Orleans in March 1988. It heals more slowly than our flap and lenticule methods, and it is important to plan for that: expect about a week off work and another week before you drive again. The final result is comparable to our other laser treatments. Which method suits your eyes is something we decide together at the free pre-examination – we also perform SMILE Pro, FS-LASIK and Trans-PRK.

The treatment itself is not painful – the eye is numbed with drops. But the first few days afterwards are often painful and your eyes are sensitive to light while the epithelium heals under the bandage lens. You are given pain-relief tablets and anaesthetic eye drops to take home.
LASEK heals more slowly and is more uncomfortable in the early days than our flap and lenticule methods. That is the trade-off you make in return for no flap being created.
Expect about a week off work and another week before you drive again. Your vision is blurry at first and clears gradually over the following weeks – the final result is usually reached within a couple of months.

Both are surface treatments with no flap, and the difference is how the epithelium is removed. In LASEK it is loosened with a mild alcohol solution and moved aside. In Trans-PRK (No Touch) the excimer laser removes the epithelium in the same step as it corrects the refractive error, with no instrument touching the eye.

During the examination, we measure your vision problem and map your eye. After analyzing the results, we will go through them with you. If treatment is possible, we will schedule an appointment for it.
We treat your vision impairment. Based on your individual condition, the treatment that is most suitable for you will be performed.
We will follow up with you regularly; after one week, three months, and one year, to monitor the treatment you received with us.
