PRK-LASEK (Laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy) was developed in the late 1980s and was the first eye laser method. This method is particularly suitable for those under 40 years old with thin corneas or for those who, for various reasons, are not candidates for our other laser treatments.
In a LASEK surgery, a mild alcohol solution is applied to dissolve the epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea. The epithelium is then removed, and an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct the vision problem. Afterward, a bandage contact lens is applied to the eye to provide protection during the first few days. The epithelium regenerates within a few days, and the bandage lens is removed.
Although PRK-LASEK has a slightly longer recovery time and can be somewhat more painful than other methods, it still results in excellent outcomes. To alleviate discomfort, pain-relief tablets and numbing eye drops are provided. Pain and light sensitivity are common during the first few days after surgery. Vision may initially be blurry, but it improves gradually over the first few weeks. It is reasonable to expect about a week off from work and another week before resuming driving. Dry eyes are commonly experienced during the first few weeks after a PRK-LASEK surgery, which is best alleviated with moisturizing eye drops. By choosing PRK/LASEK, the risk of flap-related complications (rare) during and after the procedure is eliminated.
