Yes, in theory you can go blind after refractive laser surgery, but it is extremely rare. It is important to distinguish between total blindness, serious permanent loss of vision and reduced quality of vision.
With SMILE, FS-LASIK and PRK/LASEK the great majority of complications are treatable. There are, however, rare complications that can cause permanent loss of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), even with glasses or contact lenses.
Serious complications are uncommon, but no operation is entirely free of risk. The most common outcome is not that the treatment fails but that the result lands slightly off target – a small residual refractive error, or a change over time. In those cases a further treatment can often be carried out.
At the examination we go through what is realistic for your particular eyes and what risks apply to the method we propose.
It depends on which laser method is used and how large the refractive error is. Most people see quite well after 1–3 days, and vision then continues to improve.

Sometimes there may be medical obstacles, such as autoimmune disease that causes recurrent iritis, recurrent problems with the cornea such as extreme dryness or an old scar in the middle of the cornea.

We will follow up with you regularly; after one week, three months, and one year, to monitor the treatment you received with us.
You come for a detailed preliminary examination with our specialist optician. We carry out anatomical measurements and an eye examination. We map your visual needs and individual requirements, so that we can reduce your need for glasses and contact lenses.
After all the measurements and examinations we tailor the treatment that suits your eyes best.

How quickly your vision improves after laser treatment depends on the method used and on your own circumstances. After SMILE and FS-LASIK most people see usefully as early as the following day, while surface treatments such as TRANS-PRK and PRK-LASEK need a few days to a week before the vision settles.
During the first period your vision may fluctuate and be blurred. This is normal, and is partly because the cornea is healing and the eyes and brain are adapting to the new conditions. The final result is usually reached within a couple of months.
