Co-payment – lens upgrade for cataract surgery

What is co-payment?

Choosing the right lens for your cataract surgery

When you have cataract surgery, the region pays for a monofocal lens as standard. It replaces the clouded lens in the eye, but there is often a residual refractive error that still needs correcting with glasses.

Would you like to reduce your need for glasses? There is then the option of upgrading your treatment to a more advanced lens that both corrects the refractive error and makes you less dependent on glasses in everyday life. We give a SEK 10,000 discount on our most advanced premium lenses. You are given the current price at your examination.

Your options

We offer several different types of lens, which can be matched to your needs:

  • Monofocal lens – the standard option, good for distance vision but usually requiring glasses for reading or close work.

  • Multifocal lens – corrects both near and distance vision, which can give you freedom from glasses.

  • Toric lens – corrects astigmatism and can be combined with both monofocal and multifocal lenses.

Examination and recommendation

Which lens suits you best is decided at your examination. We look at the condition of the eye and talk through what you personally want from your vision. You receive a clear recommendation based on your needs.

Results – freedom from glasses for many

According to published studies, around 85–90% of those who choose a multifocal lens achieve complete spectacle independence at all distances.

Rules and freedom of choice

Different regions have different rules on co-payment — that is, the option of paying yourself for a more advanced lens. If your home region does not offer this, you can always use free choice of care and have your treatment in another region.

About X-Vision

Frequently asked questions about co-payment

FAQ

What is co-payment (medfinansiering)?

Co-payment means you can choose a more advanced type of lens for your cataract surgery. Unlike the standard monofocal lens, which gives good vision at one distance, premium lenses such as multifocal or EDOF lenses can give sharper vision at near, intermediate and long range. The aim is to reduce, or even remove entirely, the need for glasses after surgery.

FAQ

What does recovery involve?

  • Improved vision is often noticeable the next day.

  • The eye may be red, itchy or feel dry for a couple of weeks.

  • New glasses are usually needed after about six weeks.

FAQ

Can I choose X-Vision directly?

Yes. As a general rule, once you have a referral from an optician or a doctor you may choose your own clinic within Region Skåne. This is known as free choice of care (fritt vårdval) for cataract surgery in Region Skåne.

We can also see you without a referral. In that case you complete a self-referral (egen remiss) with us.

FAQ

What does it cost?

  • Cataract surgery is specialist and surgical care covered by the national high-cost ceiling, so you pay the standard patient fee up to that ceiling.

  • If you would like a more advanced lens (for example a multifocal lens), you pay the difference yourself. We offer a SEK 10,000 discount on the most advanced premium lenses.

FAQ

How long should I expect to wait?

According to national waiting-time statistics published in July 2025, the median wait in Region Skåne from decision to surgery was around 1.3 months (roughly 41 days), somewhat shorter than the national average of about 48 days.

At X-Vision the wait from assessment to surgery is usually two to three weeks.

More about cataract

Causes and risk factors

Cataract is most often linked to natural age-related changes in the lens of the eye, but several factors can accelerate or contribute to its development. These can increase the risk of the lens clouding faster than usual and are worth bearing in mind for long-term eye health. Some of these factors are:

  • Prolonged UV exposure

  • Diabetes

  • Long-term use of corticosteroids

  • Eye injuries or other eye conditions

Symptoms of cataract

Cataract usually develops gradually, so the symptoms can be hard to notice at first. Over time, changes in vision begin to affect daily life, particularly during activities that need clear sight or good perception of light. Here are some common symptoms to look out for:

  • Blurred or hazy vision

  • Increased sensitivity to bright light or glare

  • Reduced night vision

  • Double vision in one eye

  • Colours appearing faded
