FS-LASIK is a flap-based laser treatment for those between 20 and 45 who want to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. We perform it with two lasers: the ZEISS VisuMax 800 creates the flap in the cornea and the Alcon WaveLight EX500 reshapes the cornea to your own measurements. Most people have good vision the very next day.
With FS-LASIK, two lasers work together. First the ZEISS VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser creates a thin flap in the cornea – entirely without a blade. The flap is folded aside and the Alcon WaveLight EX500 excimer laser reshapes the curvature of the cornea to your own measurements. The flap is then laid back and seals by itself, without stitches.
Because the outermost layer of the cornea is folded aside rather than removed, the eye heals quickly. The treatment is performed under anaesthetic eye drops and is not usually painful, though mild irritation and a gritty sensation during the first 24 hours are normal. By the next day vision is usually good. FS-LASIK corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, which makes it suitable for more refractive errors than SMILE Pro, which is used for myopia with or without astigmatism. You take eye drops home with you, and you can drive as soon as your vision is stable – usually after a day or two.
The VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser creates a thin flap in the cornea entirely without a blade. The flap is folded aside while the excimer laser reshapes the cornea, then laid back, where it seals by itself without stitches.
The flap is why FS-LASIK heals so quickly: the outermost layer of the cornea is lifted aside rather than removed. It is also why we sometimes suggest a surface treatment instead – if your corneas are thin, or your work or sport exposes your eyes to impact, a flap is not always the right choice.
FS-LASIK corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. SMILE Pro is used for myopia, with or without astigmatism – so if you are farsighted, FS-LASIK is the one of the two for you.
If you are nearsighted and have sensitive or dry eyes, SMILE Pro may suit you better. Which method suits your eyes is something we decide together at the free pre-examination.
Dry eyes are common during the first few weeks after any laser treatment and are easily relieved with lubricating drops. Because a flap severs more of the corneal nerves, the symptoms are often more noticeable after FS-LASIK than after SMILE Pro.
If you already have pronounced dry eye we therefore often suggest SMILE Pro or a surface treatment. We measure your tear film at the pre-examination before recommending anything.

Before your FS-LASIK procedure, you will undergo a comprehensive pre-examination with our specialist optometrist. After your FS-LASIK procedure, most people notice a significant improvement in their vision within 24 hours. However, it is normal to experience some irritation, as if there is something in your eye. This typically subsides after a few hours.
You will be provided with eye drops to help relieve any discomfort and prevent infection. Most patients can return to work within 1–2 days and resume driving once their vision is stable, usually after a day or two.
It is important to avoid rubbing your eyes and to follow our aftercare instructions carefully during the healing process. Dry eyes may occur during the first few weeks after the treatment, but this can be easily relieved with moisturizing eye drops.
